When buying used tractor tires you
should definitely do some research about used tires
first. A good place to start is a local Tractor Sales
& Supply Store or a large used tire warehouse. If you
live near a large metropolitan area there are usually
several used tire outlets that have every kind of used
tire under the sun. They will have many sizes and models
available to fit just about any size of tractor. Make
sure when you visit the store that you have all the
pertinent information about your tractor and tire that
you will be replacing.
If you are reading this then you
are probably like most farmers and know pretty much what
you need already. Your biggest concern right now is
should I replace the tire or tires new, should I repair
the tire or try to find some good used tractor tires.
Keep in mind (you probably already know this) that some
of the older models will not be available so you will
have to find a used farm tractor tire that will match. I
don’t have much experience with used tires that don’t
match but my grandfather used to say never to put 2
different kinds of tires on a tractor because the
bearings will get torn up at some point. But Grandpa also
thought that the only dogs that could hunt had to be
Brown and Red. He wouldn’t have a hunting dog was Brown
and Red. That crazy old coot always had 2
Hunting dogs and there names were
always (Yep, you guessed it “Brown and “Red”).
Where was I? I didn’t mean to get
sidetracked there I just wanted to put Grandpa’s advice
into perspective. If you are going to try
and repair the tire you don’t really have too many
options. First off, if the tire is damage in the side
wall then you should probably just replace it. That kind
of repair will not hold for long and a repair in the
middle of production could really set you back, time IS
money. If the tire is to be repaired on the farm there
are kits you can buy for that. You will also need some
specialized tools for the job also. If the tire is flat
it probably is unseated as well. The first thing you need
to do is seat the tire before repairing it. A good way to
do this is to spray a flammable aerosol around the rim
and tire and ignite it. It will seat the tire immediately
and you can begin repairs.
If repairing the tire is not an
option then you are back to looking for used tractor
tires. Just like the name of this web page implies buying
wholesale is the way to go and the best way to do that is
to get online and find the biggest used tractor tire
distributor in your country. You want to locate at least
2 big used tire dealers to compare prices. Check my
dealer page for dealers I list a few that I know
about.
Now the best case scenario would be to
locate the used tires online and get the best price and then
to find someone within a few hours driving distance that has
similar tires in stock and get him to match the price.
Usually he will come close and that’s all you can really ask
for. If you can’t find a local guy to drive to then you are
going to be faced with a couple issues. First your going to
need to get good pictures to visual inspect the tires, take
a look at the tire checklist for some tips there. Another
issue is going to be shipping the tires, take a look at this
link my page on how to ship tires. It is very important and
will save you some good money.
